1966: the Men From U.N.C.L.E. not keen on series spinoff

Using Google you can view actual newspaper stories. Marc Douglas, a fan of The Man From U.N.C.L.E., found a July 1, 1966 article in the Pittsburgh Press. It appears the paper’s TV critic was part of a press tour that got to talk to Robert Vaughn and David McCallum at MGM.

The stars of Man, it’s clear from the article, were not keen on the upcoming spinoff The Girl From U.N.C.L.E. The piece said they were “violently” opposed to appearing on Girl, with McCallum saying he wouldn’t go on at all and that publicity saying otherwise was sent “without our permission.” The Scotsman said Girl posed a risk of over-exposure for U.N.C.L.E. and there was the possibility Girl would take off while Man would suffer. Vaughn said he was opposed to appearing in the spinoff but that he’d do one as “a favor.”
