Actor Henry Cavill, in a A STORY ON THE INQUIRER ENTERTAINMENT WEB SITE hinted that The Man From U.N.C.L.E. movie he’ll be working on will be a period piece.

Here’s the key excerpt (the “caped crusader” being a reference to him playing Superman in Man of Steel):

“I am very excited about it,” added the actor, who has barely landed as the caped crusader but now he’s stepping into yet another high-profile role. Henry is taking over the role after Tom Cruise had to back out because of production schedule conflict (his fifth “Mission Impossible” will shoot around the same time as “The Man From…”). “I can’t wait to work with Guy and Armie. I can’t tell you any details about the script yet because it’s a long way from development… [but it will still be] about the Cold War. American and Russian super spies join teams to fight international terrorism.” (emphasis added)

Director Steven Soderbergh and writer Scott Z. Burns had planned their U.N.C.L.E. project, ditched in late 2011, to be set in the same time period as the 1964-68 series. Cavill didn’t say whether that story is the basis of the new project or not. If so, Burns described the basic plot during interviews for another movie he did with Soderbergh.

Guy Ritchie took over the project after Soderbergh’s departure. There has certainly been enough time since then for a different script to be written. The bigger question is whether the Cavill-Armie Hammer vehicle will grasp what made U.N.C.L.E. different than James Bond.
