Cavill says U.N.C.L.E. movie to have `dry humor’

Henry Cavill, in AN INTERVIEW WITH THE AGE NEWSPAPER IN AUSTRALIA to promote his Man of Steel movie, described U.N.C.L.E. agent Napoleon Solo as “a charmer” and said his Man From U.N.C.L.E. movie will have “dry humor.”

In the interview, Cavill said the project, based on the 1964-68 television series is “all official…The script is still sort of going through its final tweaks. I’m not going to talk too much about it.”

The Age interviewer asks about the subject of humor in U.N.C.L.E. “I like a good bit of dry humor,” Cavill responded. “There’s something about it I really, really enjoy. I’m not so much of a slapstick humor guy. I’m going to look forward to it.”

The actor also commented about the differences between Clark Kent/Superman and U.N.C.L.E.’s Napoleon Solo.

“Keep in mind, the characters are so vastly different. Napoleon Solo…he’s a charmer, where Superman is the exact opposite. He’s charming by nature, he’s not somebody goes out there to charm people or women….He’ll sit the in background and try not to be noticed.”

The original show balanced drama and humor, similar to 1960s James Bond movies. In the case of U.N.C.L.E., the third season often going overboard in humor and the fourth season drastically cut back. The first season is seen by many fans as the most consistent. Sam Rolfe, the show’s developer, was producer that season, working with executive producer Norman Felton. Felton and Ian Fleming co-created the Solo character, with Rolfe devising the other U.N.C.L.E. elements.

The new U.N.C.L.E. film is to be directed by Guy Ritchie, who also did a balancing act with drama and humor with two Sherlock Holmes movies starring Robert Downey Jr.
