The new movie Watchmen, based on the 12-issue series DC Comics series by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, opened today. What’s this got to do with a James Bond/spy entertainment weblog? Well, there’s a definite tip of the cap to Ken Adam, production designer on seven 007 films.
Adam, designed the sets for Dr. No, the first Bond film. Adam’s work caught the eye of director Stanley Kurbrick, who tapped Adam to design his then-upcoming film, Dr. Strangelove: Or How I Stopped Worrying And Learned to Love the Bomb.
Anyway, in Watchmen, there are some scenes of Richard Nixon consulting with his generals in a Pentagon war room, complete with circular lights suspended from the ceiling, just like Dr. Strangelove.
It just goes to show that the 88-year-old, German-born Adam can still inspire filmmakers today.
